What do fast cars, golf and charity have in common?

This past Thursday, April 20th, I had the opportunity to spend my morning among BMW Executives, board members, volunteers, BMW Performance Center + Charity Pro-Am staff and a sea of representatives from 18 different charities in Upstate, South Carolina. The occasion? Media Day for the 2017 BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation.

Several television and radio media were present as this year’s celebrity lineup was announced. After the event, attendees were invited to participate in “hot laps” and you know I signed up (yours truly got to go on two rides and loved the experience)! BMW certainly pulled off a very fun morning for all present.

Part of what I aim to share in this space is advocacy–especially for local causes. Today I present to you one of the 18 charities chosen as a recipient of this year’s tournament, the Center for Developmental Services. I have the opportunity to work closely with the Center for Developmental Services (CDS) and will be volunteering at the tournament on their behalf. Also, as a baseball fan, it is definitely a bonus knowing that Tim Wakefield (former MLB player) will be the celebrity player representing CDS at the tournament!

The BMW Charity Pro-AM presented by SYNNEX Corporation offers a variety of ways in which anyone can give back (to CDS or any of other wonderful causes benefiting from the event). Here are a couple (bear with me, it’s about to get a little technical):

  1. Volunteer (or host a volunteer)! Full Disclosure: It costs $40 to volunteer–most golf events run that way. Volunteers receive an Adidas uniform (golf shirt, cap or visor, and pin) as well as meals during every shift and two credentials to the tournament. On top of that, BMW donates $20 to the volunteer’s chosen charity for every shift completed. For every 50 shifts completed on behalf of X charity, they get another $2,000! If you cannot volunteer yourself, consider hosting a volunteer (or two or three). This a really, really easy way to raise money for a good cause while having fun (and meeting pro players and celebrities–why would you not do this?!)
  2. Get tickets! Buy tickets to the tournament directly from your chosen charity (they get to keep 100% of their sales). For example, I am supporting the Center for Developmental Services–so I could get my tickets directly from them. There are four types of tickets for sale:
    • Daily Tickets
    • Patron Tickets (access to entire tournament)
    • Clubhouse Tickets
    • Clubhouse + Meal Tickets
    • If you are interested in tickets, please click here to buy from CDS!
  3. Take a (wild) educated guess! Under Par for Charity is a new contest for the BMW Charity Pro-Am in 2017. In a nutshell this is what it is all about: fans guess the number of birdies to be carded during the tournament and are encouraged to pledge a gift to any of the charities involved. The Monday after the tournament is over, official PGA statistics will be released and the top 4 closest guesses will receive a prize! (1 grand prize, 3 runner up prizes)
  4. Play at the tournament! Those in the area (or wanting to come down to #yeahTHATGreenville in May) can sign up for either one-day pro-am competitions on the 15th and 16th. I hear on one of the days players will get to hang out with the President of BMW. If you are interested, click here for more information (and feel free to play on behalf of CDS!)

So what do fast cars, golf and charity have in common? They are what–on a very basic level–make up the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation. On a deeper level, however, this event is a group of professional and amateur players, talented celebrities and local heroes coming together to raise awareness and funds for 18 great, local causes.

The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation takes place May 15th-21st at Thornblade Golf Club, the Preserve at Verdae and Furman University Golf Club–all in Greenville, South Carolina. If you are a little ways away, make sure to catch the tournament action from 7pm-9pm on the Golf Channel!

Be sure to leave a comment if you are participating in any way!

’til later,
